The Yoga Section of the Doctrine and Covenents

Did you know that the Doctrine & Covenants has several sections on Kundalini Yoga?--Okay I don't mean this literally. But there are many places in the Gospels and the Book of Mormon and the D&C that have many layers of meaning and I see Kundalini Yoga and Meditation all over them. [For those who don't know, the D&C as we call it is a collection of modern revelations that Mormons also consider scripture--in addition to The Bible, Book of Mormon and several other documents, which we also consider to be the word of God. You can learn more about it here.]

For now, I will just cover section 65. It's short (only 6 verses), so I will reprint the whole thing with commentary.  This revelation was given through Joseph Smith, the prophet in October 1831.

Hearken, and lo, a voice as of one sent down from on high, who is mighty and powerful, whose going forth is unto the ends of the earth, yea, whose voice is unto men—aPrepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
If the "Kingdom of God" is within you, as Jesus said, then it makes sense that the way of the Lord, could be the straight path of the spine. Keep the spine straight is essential in the technology of God-realization, which is Kundalini Yoga.

The akeys of the bkingdom of God are committed unto man on the earth, and from thence shall the cgospel roll forth unto the ends of the earth, as the dstone which is cut out of the mountain without hands shall roll forth, until it has efilled the whole earth.

The keys of the kingdom here are of course referring to the priesthood keys which were restored through Joseph Smith and which are enabling the gospel to roll forth on the earth. But when I think again of the kingdom of our bodies, I think about what keys do. They open locks. In the science of kriya yoga there are 3 locks in the body. For example, when a person pulls the root lock they tighten the anus, sex organs and navel, which directs the energy flow up the spine. Another lock is the neck lock. If the neck is not locked, the energy may rise up the spine and then get stuck at the base of the neck.

The chakras are also often to compared to lock or seals that open.

The second part of this verse describes the hastening forth of the Gospel. The gospel is the good news, and we are indeed seeing the fulfillment of this prophecy with the spread of missionary work. Also recently, other good news is spreading. For example, the practice of Kundalini Yoga is also growing at a rate of 20% /year. Someone once asked my teacher why it was growing so fast. She said, "Because people are falling apart and it works really fast."

Yea, a voice crying—aPrepare ye the way of the Lord, prepare ye the bsupper of the Lamb, make ready for the cBridegroom.

Preparation is so key. I can say more about preparation in another post, but a daily practice of communion with God is the best kind of preparation.

When I think about the Bridegroom, I think of people wearing white. If you practice kundalini yoga and meditation for long, you'll find it's not like other yogas. The teachers don't wear black tight clothes and show off their bodies. Most teachers wear white, dress modestly in attractive, loose fitting clothing, and cover their heads. The students tend to follow. I love white! I want to be wearing white when I meet Jesus.

Pray unto the Lord, acall upon his holy name, make known his wonderful bworks among the people.

The practice of mantra meditation, whether chanted out loud or silently, is a practice of calling on the many different names of God and praising Him! People think this section is about prayer but it is really about meditation. I have said it before: Meditation is a form of prayer, but prayer is not meditation.

Call upon the Lord, that his kingdom may go forth upon the earth, that the inhabitants thereof may receive it, and be prepared for the days to come, in the which the Son of Man shall acome down in heaven, bclothed in the brightness of his cglory, to meet the dkingdom of God which is set up on the earth.

Okay. There is a lot of great stuff in this verse. First, it repeats the directive to call on the name of the Lord. Mantra, Mantra, Mantra!

Then there is some discussion of the coming of Christ to meet the kingdom of God which is set up on the earth. I think we usually think of this as the literal Second Coming. I think that there are two meanings. It is one of God's patterns to create everything spiritually first, then physically. So before the literal second coming happens, there needs to be a spiritual second coming, to the Kingdom of God which is set up on the earth in our own bodies. "The Kingdom of God is within you."

Also, the word "meet" implies that both parties travel.  Perhaps this is why we need to raise our Kundalini (up the straight spine) and Christ will come down and there will be a meeting. Perhaps this is why the crown chakra at the top of the head is also called the 10th Gate. This is the gate which Jesus will enter.

Wherefore, may the akingdom of God go forth, that thebkingdom of heaven may come, that thou, O God, mayest becglorified in heaven so on earth, that thine denemies may be subdued; for ethine is the honor, power and glory, forever and ever. Amen.

It is my belief that when enough people on earth experience the raising of their kundalini/awakening their divine potential, and experience this spiritual second coming, then the earth will be ready for the literal second coming.

Did Joseph Smith know about the kundalini yoga and meditation technology of God-realization when he received this? Who knows. But God, who gave him the revelation certain knew about it and Christ certainly did, as I have been writing about in my tagged posts Yoga of Jesus.

If you have any further thoughts on this or questions, feel free to comment.

I love how sci-fi movies always tend get it without telling anyone they get it...

  1. I must say that I cringed when I read this post. It sounds an awful lot like the doctrines of men mingled with scripture.

"Did you know that the Doctrine & Covenants has several sections on Kundalini Yoga?"

No. The Doctrine & Covenants does not teach Kundalini Yoga. "Kundalini Yoga" is nowhere to be found in the Topical Guide, or the Index. Nor are the mudras or any of the mantras. Section 65 of D&C is teaching about the Priesthood keys which are necessary for the preaching of the Gospel to the world. Without the authority of the priesthood, our Church would be no different than any other, as we would not have the "fulness" of the Gospel, meaning the ordinances necessary for salvation, which are administered through the keys of the Priesthood.

The beautiful thing about the scriptures is that they are multi-layered, and we each find different insights in them based on our needs and where we are spiritually. It is one thing to say, "Hey, I was reading the scriptures the other day and I found a something that reminded me of Kundalini and this is how..." vs. "The scriptures teach Kundalini." Only the Prophet has the authority to say that.

From what I've learned of Kundalini Yoga so far, which isn't a whole lot, it seems as though it can stand on its own, without bending doctrine.

    1. Hi Diana. Thanks for your comment. I wasn't intending to bend doctrine at all. But thanks for showing me that it seems that way. It was merely saying hey look at this. It sounds an awful lot there are multiple layers of meaning in the scriptures. And Of course the keys mentioned are about the priesthood. I'm just saying....

    3. It is much more clear! :) I hope it wasn't too harsh, that wasn't my intent. And I agree with Amanda, thank you for sharing your insights from the scriptures.

And thank you for providing a place open for discussion. :)

  3. I've just started scratching the surface on your blog and I love it! I think you're spot on with this post. I love the idea of the spine being straight. When we started chiropractic care for my special needs boy, I found out that the spine is seen as the center of the body's nervous system and foundational in healing, both mentally and physically. I think this correlates well with yoga. I can fully attest that when your spine is out of alignment, your life gets out of alignment as well, on many different levels. I really, really love the idea of us meeting Christ instead of him just descending down to see us at the Second Coming. I love the idea that what we are trying to do in preparing to meet him is raising our vibration to a higher frequency to be more like His. It's not just a "Sunday School" answers sort of thing; you can't fake vibrations. After all, the Earth will be cleansed of the wicked before the Second Coming, so if we are to remain to see Christ, we must have Him come into our hearts and minds first to be truly prepared.

  4. Oh and also, the body being the kingdom of God makes sense when you think of certain parts of the initiatory. OK, I'm done now. =)
